Welcome to Bis2information.org.

This site is dedicated to let professionals inform professionals about BISII.

We aim to give a clear and practical description of BISII for a variety of readers. From the general manager who needs to know the general ideas behind BISII, to the risk modeller looking for statistical methods. From the policy maker who needs to know what internal policies are important, to the IT specialist who implements them.

Sharing information and creating industry standards forms a large part of BISII. The central banks actively stimulate the sharing of information, to let BISII evolve into a stable system. This ensures it does not produce large differences between countries and financial institutions.

To facilitate this we intend to establish a set of best practices for implementing BISII. Such a set of best practices can only be created by representatives of the industry. Therefore we would like to invite you to help create these industry standards and
submit an article
. Your article will be reviewed and published on the site. Additionally your résumé and/or company profile can be added to the “Writers” section. Allow your (your company’s) knowledge to make an impact.

If you wish to post comments on articles or participate in the Forum you can login (or register) on the right side of the side.

Above everything the articles here are intended to be practical. This site is not a platform for theoretical papers. Problems are identified (for instance how to calculate model the PD) and practical solutions are suggested (a set of methods and steps are given for modelling).

Mission statement

Our mission is to help BIS II professionals create a set of best practices for the industry.

BIS II is a relatively new development within the financial sector. It has had a large impact on most financial institutions who had to implement it. It meant new IT systems, new departments, new modelling techniques, new policies, etc.

Many companies began an expedition to find the best way to implement the new guidelines. Each financial institute started developing their own moddeling methods, policies, organisation, etc.

This initial stage of exploration is now over. Most financial institutions have now implemented some form of BIS II framework. However, in the aftermath of this initial stage few standards have emerged. Many different systems exist.

As with every new development, after initiation comes consolidation. It is in the direct interest of the financial industry to create industry standards. there are several benefits:

Who are we

A word from the founder, Jacco Muller

This site started as my personal initiative to fill a perceived lack of information on the internet. I started working for a large Dutch bank several years ago. At first as a general management trainee followed by a career as risk professional.

During my years as risk professional I was involved in several risk projects for several portfolio's. At first as a risk modeller, in projects such as:

Currently I am a risk manager focussed on risk policies for the Dutch SME market. This, among others, involves the policies for the use of risk models within the bank and ensuring the existence of good management information.

In the early days of my work I concluded that there were only three types of information available on the internet, considering risk management within banks.

Furthermore I found that interactive sharing of information is very limited and mostly confined to congresses. These types of information and methods of sharing, make it difficult to develop a global view of risk management within banking. I considered it important to lower the threshold for information sharing about risk management within financial institutions. Therefore I created this site.

We value the independent status of our site highly. None of the writers for this site rely on income from it. Any content on this site has been and always will be scrutinized by site management. Even though some articles might be opinionated they will never be so in an attempt to sell a product. Companies can purchase advertisement space. However companies' requests will be evaluated for their professional attitude towards the subject at hand, to ensure the quality and reliability of the site.
